A pioneering science fiction film, a document of its time with groundbreaking visual effects and approach to depicting future technologies, many of which have since been adapted as conventions of the genre. One of the first films to establish a robot as a character with a distinct personality, and outside of science fiction cinema, the first feature film of any genre to use an entirely electronic musical score, composed by electronic music legends Bebe and Louis Barron.
