Alec Guiness, who also wrote the screenplay, stars as the cantankerous and ill-mannered aging artist Gulley Jimson. Determined to not let anything come between himself and his artistic vision, he proceeds to paint a mural in the home of the millionaires, Sir William and Lady Beeder, away for a six week holiday.
