Based on the novel "La vie extraordinaire de Lola Montes" by Cecil Saint-Laurent. A once-renowned European courtesan and former dancer is reduced to working in a New Orleans circus as the main attraction. A film which did poorly in theaters upon release, but is now acclaimed for its crucial influence on the French New Wave cinema movement. Director Max Ophuls' final film before his death two years later, in 1957.

Set in New Orleans, shot on location in Austria, Germany, and France.
