Playwright Charles Ludlam's second play, following "Big Hotel" earlier that same year, for the Play-House of the Ridiculous, an experimental, camp theatrical ensemble founded by John Vaccaro in the mid-1960s. The play featured several Warhol superstars as quarrelsome interplanetary royalty, with a loosely structured plot, meant to showcase the actors' personalities more than any definite narrative or character development. The production faced difficulties due to disagreements between Ludlam and Vaccaro, leading Ludlam to depart from the group, create his own theatrical troupe called The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, and stage a separate version of the play under the alternate title "When Queens Collide," which debuted several months after Vaccaro's production.
