A poor young woman, desperate for money for her ill mother's medicine, resorts to prostitution and theft, is caught and convicted, but escapes and seeks refuge in a traveling carnival, where she falls in love with a vagabond painter. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Actress for Janet Gaynor, nominated for two others, including Best Cinematography.
