Based on the 1922 play "The Lady Cristilinda" by Monckton Hoffe. A poor young woman, desperate for money for her ill mother's medicine, resorts to prostitution and theft, is caught and convicted, but escapes and seeks refuge in a traveling carnival, where she falls in love with a vagabond painter. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Actress for Janet Gaynor, nominated for two others, including Best Cinematography.

Set in Naples, Italy, shot on location in Santa Catalina Island, California.
