Doon Spile, a mute, escapes from the asylum he has been committed to, and encounters his estranged nephew, Leroy, in the woods. When Leroy almost drowns while swimming in the lake, Doon overcomes his fear of water and rescues the boy, only to be misinterpreted by a mob as hurting the boy.
