Death Minus One [Silent Enemy]

Included are one partial draft script, several letters and memos between screenwriter Arthur Hailey, agent Maeve Southgate, and Theatre Guild executives William Herman and Arthur Heinemann. Also in the archive are several memos from within the Theatre Guild office, discussing revisions to the script and ultimately declining to move ahead with production.

Dated variously between May 12 and September 5, 1958, with a three-page manuscript summary of revisions made to the script, ostensibly in Hailey's hand, and two carbon typescript summaries of the same.

As noted in several letters from Maeve Southgate, Hailey's screenplay was previously used for the television episode "Death Minus One," which aired on BBC, on the British television anthology series "Encounter," on January 28, 1958.

A young American girl visiting her cousin in London is trapped when postwar ruins collapse, leading a police sergeant to rescue her. As he works to retrieve the girl, The sergeant discovers an unexploded bomb with her among the rubble.

Set in London.
