An allegory about societal attitudes towards homosexuality, following the prince of a small European kingdom who is forbidden from succeeding to the throne as a result of his incurable leprosy. Italian-American playwright Gian Carlo Menotti was better known for his work as a composer of operas, including "The Consul" (1950), "Amahl and the Night Visitors" (1951), and "The Saint of Bleeker Street" (1955).
