Photograph of David Bowie and his first band The Kon-rads, 1963
London: London Features International LTD, Circa 1970s. Vintage photograph of David Bowie and his first band The Kon-rads from a professional photo session in 1963, struck from the original negative circa 1970s, with "London Features International LTD" stamp on verso.
Bowie, then David Jones, far left on saxophone, is seen here at sixteen years old with a blonde pompadour similar to the one he donned twenty years later for his 1983 "Let's Dance" album, with his first band The Kon-rads. Bowie formed the Kon-rads in 1962, playing youth gatherings and local weddings. Bowie left the band and joined Davie Jones and the King Bees, releasing his first single "Liza Jane" in 1964.
A 1963 demo tape of the Kon-rads was found by bandmate David Hadfield in an old bread basket in the 1990s, and in 2018 it sold for nearly 40,000 GBP.
