Loosely based on the 1946-1950 memoirs of Gilbert Renault writing as Colonel Remy, about a small town in the Jura divided by a narrow river which forms the border between Nazi-occupied France and the free zone. The first of four World War II films directed by Claude Chabrol, followed by "The Blood of Others" (1984), "Story of Women" (1988), and "L'oeil de Vichy" (1993).
Shot on location in Belmont, Chissey, Dole, and Port-Lesney, Jura.
