A down-on-his-luck veteran searching for a place to commit suicide wanders into the courtyard of a feudal lord, where he is forced to reveal the story behind his current circumstances. Director Masaki Kobayashi's masterpiece, considered one of the finest samurai films ever made, skewering the hypocrisy of the feudal system and the empty glory of samurai culture.
