Mailer unsuccessfully ran in the Democratic Party primary for mayor of New York City in 1968, purportedly at the suggestion of Gloria Steinem and his friend Noel Parmentel. Although Mailer took stance on a wide variety of issues, his campaign focused heavily on the creation of a 51st state through New York City secession.
