Shortly after being appointed by the president to lead America's war on drugs, a conservative judge in Ohio discovers that his teenage daughter is addicted to heroin. Meanwhile, the wife of a jailed drug baron attempts to continue her husband's business. Nominated for five Academy Awards, winning four, including Best Director for Steven Soderbergh, Best Screenwriter for Stephen Gaghan, and Best Supporting Actor for Benicio Del Toro.

Shot on location in California, New Mexico, Ohio, and Texas in the US, and in San Ysidro and Tijuana in Mexico.
