An amateur prizefighter's desire for fortune and fame leads him to join a corrupt boxing syndicate, led by an unethical promoter. Widely considered one of the finest boxing films ever made, with a strong screenplay by noted screenwriter Abraham Polonsky (who would later face blacklisting in Hollywood as a result of the HUAC trials).
