The Brave Cowboy: An Old Tale in a New Time
New York: Dodd, Mead, 1956. First Edition, copy belonging to the author's English professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM), T.M. Pearce, with Pearce's annotations in manuscript pencil throughout, relating his recollections about Abbey during the author's time at UNM, and identifying names and places in the novel. With Pearce's name in manuscript ink on the front pastedown, and two newspaper clippings regarding the 1962 film adaptation, "Lonely Are the Brave," affixed to the front endpaper.
Full provenance available pertaining to the book's previous owner, Conrad Sarvis, who was given the book from Pearce widow, Helen Spang Pearce, and regarding the family's close relationship and abrupt fallout with the author. Sarvis' father, A.T. Sarvis, was a long-term friend of the author and fellow student at UNM, and was the inspiration for the character A.K. Sarvis from Abbey's 1975 novel, "The Monkey Wrench Gang."
A unique association copy of the author's second novel, by far the scarcest of his books, extremely scarce even without the amiable and insightful annotations found here.
Very Good plus in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Offsetting to the front pastedown, and some toning to the front endpaper. Jacket with light creasing and starting at the top of the flap folds.
