April is Jazz Month in New York: 4-Day Festival of the Arts for the Benefit of the Harlem Jazz Music Center

New York: The Afro-Arts Cultural Center / The Bureau of Continuing Education, 1970. Vintage flyer for the four-day arts festival, held to benefit the Harlem Jazz Music Center, April 23-26, 1970, at the Mary McLeod Bethune School in New York.

The festival opened with a performance by the Society of Black Composers, a group founded in 1968 and whose members included David Baker, Marion Brown, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, and Oliver Nelson, and closed with a screening of a series of jazz films and a performance by The Afro-American Singing Theatre, a collective of singers who performed jazz-opera improvisations.
