Welch worked as a newspaper journalist and activist for women's suffrage in Topeka, Kansas, later moving to California and marrying prominent artist and writer Rob Wagner. In 1929 the pair founded "Script," a left-leaning, weekly literary film magazine that often published interviews and articles concerning progressive and radical topics in Hollywood. Welch was also an early supporter of writers William Saroyan and Ray Bradbury, publishing their work extensively in the magazine. After Wagner's death Welch would remarry early aviator James L. Breese, with whom she lived in New Mexico and California until her death in 1959.
