Based on the Confederate "Beefsteak Raid" of 1864 during the Civil War. William Holden is an expatriate cattleman in Mexico during the Civil War who supplies the Union with cattle until Confederate Colonel Rossiter, played by Richard Widmark, kidnaps the cattleman, leaving him little choice but to cooperate with the Confederacy.

Set in Petersburg, Virginia, shot on location in Baton Rouge and Clinton, Louisiana.
