Based on the 1930 play by William A. Drake, which was based in turn on the 1929 novel by Vicki Baum, about a plush hotel in Berlin with a varied collection of residents—a baron, a prima ballerina, a stenographer, a dying man, and a businessman. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture.
