Fitzgerald was an Irish stage, film, and television actress who was an Academy Award and Tony Award nominee, and an Emmy Award recipient. She made her theatrical debut at 19 in 1932 and starred in several British films before emigrating to New York in 1938 where she starred opposite Orson Welles in the Mercury Theatre production of "Heartbreak House." In 1939 she signed with Warner Brothers and starred in William Wyler's 1939 "Wuthering Heights," her first Hollywood film, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Fitzgerald's long and varied career on stage, screen, and television lasted for six decades, and she was listed as number 30 in "The Irish Times" list of Ireland's greatest film actors, as well as being a member of the American Theater Hall of Fame.
