The State of Art Education

San Francisco: N.p., Circa 1990. Vintage protest flyer, featuring a collage of Jesse Helms' body on a svelte, unclothed male torso, from the San Francisco area, circa 1990.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s the late Senator Jesse Helms, along with other members of the religious right, including the Moral Majority and the American Family Association, launched an unprecedented attack on the arts, largely denouncing and censoring (or attempting to censor) art addressing the AIDS crisis and issues relevant or related to the LGBQT community in general, resulting in a prolonged and intense clash between the religious right political community and the arts community in general, and severe cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) budget.

8.5 x 11 inches. Pinholes at the corners, else Near Fine.
