A woman contends with her husband's increasingly jealous behavior, eventually realizing that he has gone completely mad. Although the film was a critical and financial disappointment at the time of release, it garnered several prominent fans, including Jacques Lacan, who purportedly used it in psychoanalysis classes as an example of the paranoid mind. It is now considered among Buñuel's best, and in 2009 was included in a list of 100 essential films by "Cahièrs du Cinèma."
