Rainer is most famous for being the first actress to win back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1937 and 1938 for "The Great Zeigfeld" (1936) and "The Good Earth" (1937) respectively. She did a number of stage productions and films in Austria and Germany before she started working with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a contract that lasted only three years due to the high expectations placed on her after her double Oscar win.
