Dunn began his career as a stage actor, landing a lead on Broadway in 1929's "Sweet Adeline." His Broadway performance lead to him getting signed as a player for Twentieth Century Fox in 1931. He did a number of his best-known films with Fox, including "Bright Eyes" (1934) alongside Shirley Temple and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" (1945) for which he won the Academy Ward for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Dunn broke his contract with Twentieth Century Fox two years too early in 1935, signing instead with Republic Pictures in 1936.
