MacDonald was an influential American soprano singer and actress, a Broadway regular in the 1920s, and star of several key musicals like "The Love Parade" (1929), "One Hour with You" (1932), "Naughty Marietta" (1935), and "San Francisco" (1936) (all nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture), as well as "Maytime" (1937), "Cairo" (1942), and "Three Daring Daughters" (1948). As a singer she earned three gold records, and recorded nearly 90 songs for RCA Victor.
