The Raw Edge of Victory [Washington]

INSCRIBED on the title page by playwright Barrie Stavis: "December, 1976 / This copy of Washington is for Norman Weinstein, friend, poet, valued colleague. It is presented with gratitude for the brilliant cutting he did on the script during that midstream time of tension [and] travail when the author doesn't see the forest for the trees. Born in New York and educated at Columbia University, playwright Barrie Stavis primarily wrote about historical figures whose discoveries and beliefs challenged contemporary authority. Although his work was performed infrequently in the US, his plays were successful internationally, particularly in Eastern Europe. He is today best remembered for his first tetralogy of plays, "Lamp at Midnight" (1947), "The Man Who Never Died" (1954), "Harpers Ferry" (1960), and "Coat of Many Colors" (1968). The National Theatre Conference established the Barrie and Bernice Stavis Award for Emerging Playwrights in 1988 in honor of his work.

A drama about the life of George Washington, "The Raw Edge of Victory" was first produced in 1976 at the Midland Community Theatre in Texas, under the direction of Art Cole, and was first published in "Dramatics" in the April and May 1986 issues.
