Based on the 1962 play "First Love: A Play in Three Acts" by Samuel Taylor, which was adapted from the 1960 French autobiographical novel "La Promesse de l'aube" by Romain Gary.

Depiction of the the young life of writer Romain Gary, illegitimate son of Soviet silent film actress Nina Kacewa, and their life together in Leningrad, Krakow, and Paris. The last film film to be directed by Hollywood black-listed director Jules Dassin.

Shot on location in Nice and Paris, France, and the USSR.
