Although Ellington's career had flagged throughout the postwar years, his landmark appearance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival marked an significant upwards turn in his career, resulting in a new recording contract with Columbia Records, and several jobs scoring films—most notably Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959).
From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.
