Paris: L'Aurore, Circa 1970. Vintage oversize borderless photograph of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre with political dissident Alain Geismar at Geismar's trial on October 20, 1970. Stamp of L'Aurore on the verso, along with annotations in manuscript ink crediting photographer Michel Clément.

Alain Geismar was one of the leaders of May 68, alongside Jacques Sauvageot and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, and was brought to trial for his attempts to reconstitute the Gauche prolétarienne (the Proletarian Left) party. Sartre appeared at the trial, speaking against the French government's repressive measures against the members of the left wing. Geismar would ultimately be sentenced to 18 months at Fresnes Prison, but would continue to work in politics after his release.

From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.
