Bowie formed his first band at the age of 15, using the stage name David Jay or David Jones, and playing at local youth gatherings and weddings. He initially served as the group's saxophonist, eventually taking over as the frontman.
From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.
