Hoffmann was best known as an Abstract Expressionist painter in the early and mid-twentieth century, and as an influential art teacher for a number of postwar avant-garde artists, including Helen Frankenthaler, Nell Blaine, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and many others.
From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.
