Original publicity photograph of Greta Garbo and Mauritz Stiller arriving in America in 1925

Greta Garbo, Mauritz Stiller (subjects)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], Circa 1925. Vintage publicity photograph of Swedish actress Greta Garbo with her mentor, Finnish director Mauritz Stiller, leaning against a rail on the SS Drottningholm, the steamship that brought them to the US in July of 1925. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer snipe on the verso, publicizing the new influx of Swedish talent to the studio, along with a provenance stamp.

Garbo was brought to America, and to MGM, at the insistence of Stiller, who demanded that she be part of any contract he signed with the studio. Her career soon eclipsed his, largely due to his difficulty integrating into the American studio system.

10 x 8 inches. Very Good plus, lightly age toned.
