After dying in a plane crash, the ghost of an acid-tongued, widely hated publisher finds himself doomed to be a restless spirit unless he can find a human on Earth who can shed a tear for him. Nöel Coward's first starring film role.

Although Barrymore did not appear in "The Scoundrel," he appeared in the 1934 film "Twentieth Century," written by Hecht and MacArthur.
