Hailed by many as the literary opening of the twentieth century, written by author Knut Hamsun after his return from an ill-fated tour of America. Basis for several film adaptations, including a 1966 Swedish-Danish film starring Per Oscarsson and Gunnel Lindblom, and a 2001 American film starring Joseph Culp.

Very Good, with a contemporary owner name in manuscript ink on the front endpaper, a slight lean, and faint foxing on the endpapers.
