A landmark of New Hollywood cinema, and arguably the high spot (as well as the beginning) of an incredible streak of inventive cinematic achievements directed by George Roy Hill in the 1960s and 1970s that included "Slaughterhouse-Five" (1972), "The Sting" (1973), and "Slap Shot" (1977).

Loosely based on fact, Butch Cassidy (Newman) and his partner, the Sundance Kid (Redford), are on the run from a US posse after a string of train robberies. They flee to Bolivia in search of a a better way to be thieves, but ultimately meet their doom.
