An association copy of the first order, INSCRIBED by the author to his first grade teacher on the half-title page and dated in the year of publication: "To Mary Alice Jayne / The woman who taught me to read and to write. You are one of the family and I have loved you since age six—twenty-eight years and going strong. You have done more for Eastern Kentucky than anyone. / With respect and admiration / Chris Offutt / 92 / KY." Additionally SIGNED by Offutt and dated [19]92 on the title page.

Offutt's work has received awards from the Lannan Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the National Endowment for the Arts. He received a Whiting Award in Fiction and Nonfiction. In 1996 he was named one of the twenty best young American fiction writers by Granta magazine.

Offutt has been a visiting faculty member at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the University of Montana, the University of New Mexico, Grinnell College, Morehead State University, and Mercer University. He is teaching at the University of Mississippi as visiting faculty.
