From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s.
Virginia Field was a British-born stage, screen, and television actress who starred in 45 films between 1934 and 1964. Field's first (uncredited) performance was in the 1934 British comedy "The Lady is Willing," which was shortly thereafter followed by a contract offer from 20th Century Fox. She is best known for her performances in in "Charlie Chan at Monte Carlo" "Think Fast, Mr. Moto" and "Mr. Moto's Last Warning," all from 1937. She is also celebrated for her stage performances in "The Doughgirls" and "Light Up the Sky," from 1942 and 1948 respectively. Field's only performance in a Universal film during the 1930s, the studio whose stamp is on the verso of the photograph, was the 1939 film "The Sun Never Sets," directed by Rowland V. Lee, and co-starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Basil Rathbone.
