Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1957. Two vintage publicity photographs from the 1957 film noir, one showing actor Jeff Chandler, the other showing actress Jeanne Crain. One with provenance stamps and annotations in manuscript ink and pencil on the verso.

A dark tale about Nick Hoak, a corrupt sheriff in a small Nevada town whose principal concerns are the maintenance and upkeep of all illegal activity. A lawyer and his lascivious wife stumble into Hoak's territory, and conflict ensues. One of the seedier late noirs, with a tawdry quality that transcended its big studio trappings.

From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s.

Set in Desert View, Nevada, shot on location in California.
