Original publicity photograph of Piper Laurie
Universal City: Universal Pictures, 1953. Vintage publicity photograph of actress Piper Laurie in 1953.
Laurie signed with Universal in 1949, making her breakthrough appearance opposite Ronald Reagan in "Louisa" (1950). Although she was cast in prominent roles in a number of films, Laurie became frustrated with the lack of substantial parts, and broke her contract in 1955 to move to New York City to study acting. The actress would only return to Hollywood in 1960, when she was offered a role in "The Hustler" (1961), a performance which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s.
