Anger, one of the most significant filmmakers to come out of the American avant-garde in the mid-1960s, was born in Southern California and began making films when he was only ten years old. His work often prominently featured homosexual themes, paired with the surreal and occult, and he is today considered to have been one of the first directors to address homosexuality in an undisguised manner.

Although renowned in artistic photography circles in the twentieth century, Edmund Teske is primarily remembered today for his portraits of celebrities. Operating out of Laurel Canyon, Teske was a pioneer of experimental techniques, frequently utilizing solarizations and montages, and in 1958 perfected a process termed "duotone solarization" by his contemporary, Edward Steichen.
