Loosely based on the 1841 short story by Edgar Allan Poe, an atmospheric tale heavily influenced by German Expressionism, about a mad scientist who kidnaps the women of Paris in order to mix their blood with his pet gorilla's. The film was the first to have actor Bela Lugosi in the role of a mad scientist or doctor, a role he would reprise throughout his career.
