Batcolumn [Bat Column]

Photograph of Claes Oldenburg on site for the 1977 installation and dedication of Oldenburg's large-scale public art installation, "Batcolumn," at the US Social Security Administration plaza in downtown Chicago. Photograph with annotation in manuscript pencil on the verso, noting the name of German photographer Harry Shunk. Also included are two different vintage programs for the event.
"Batcolumn" was commissioned by the US General Services Administration, and depicts a giant baseball bat constructed in latticework COR-TEN steel and painted gray, standing on its knob. The dedication ceremony was held on April 14, 1977, and included remarks by Mayor of Chicago Michael A. Bilandic and National Endowment for the Arts Deputy Chairman Michael Straight.
Photograph 10 x 8 inches. One program 8.25 x 8.5 inches, the other 8 x 5.25 inches. All materials generally Near Fine.
