Based on Tennessee Williams' 1957 play "Orpheus Descending," based in turn on his earlier 1940 play "Battle of Angels." A drifter flees the law in New Orleans and finds work at a small-town store run by a resentful and frustrated older woman, whose husband lies ill in the apartment above the store.

Set in the Deep South, shot on location in Milton, New York.
