Loosely based on the 1841 short story by Edgar Allan Poe, an atmospheric tale heavily influenced by German Expressionism, about a mad scientist who kidnaps the women of Paris in order to mix their blood with his pet gorilla's. The film was the first to have Lugosi in the role of a mad scientist or doctor, a role he would reprise throughout his career.
