[Dragstrip 66] [The Plush Life]

Los Angeles: Dragstrip 66, Circa 1990s. Vintage double-sided flyer advertising events held by Dragstrip 66 in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, circa 1990s. One side advertises a "day-glo black light event" held at Rudolpho's, while the other side advertises the season premiere of drag theatre series "The Plush Life" at Casita Del Campo Restaurant's Cavern Club.

Monthly underground club event Dragstrip 66 was founded by DJ Paul V and Mr. Dan in 1993, at Rudolpho's on Riverside Drive in Silver Lake. The party usually revolved around a theme—such as "20,000 Queens Under the Sea," "Dragula," "Victor/Victoria's Secret," and more—with attendees encouraged to dress up through discounted cover charges for thematically relevant outfits. "Dragstrip" was attended by a broad mix of queer and straight patrons, and the event became one of the city's most enduring creative hubs.

The overwhelming success of Dragstrip 66 led the owners of Rudolpho's to ask Dragstrip organizers to book the basement club at Casita del Campo in Silver Lake. Casita's basement space was soon christened "The Cavern Club," and became a venue for drag-oriented stage productions. One such production, "The Plush Life," was a weekly, largely improvised soap opera parody revolving around the motley inhabitants of a low-rent trailer park in Hollywood.

Dragstrip 66 held its final party in January of 2013, after a 20-year run. A documentary about the event and its organizers, "Dragstrip 66: The Frockumentary," has been in the works for several years, as of 2025.
