Original invitation for a show by North Beach Leather, 1991
San Francisco: North Beach Leather, 1991. Vintage postcard invitation for North Beach Leather's 1991 Spring/Summer collection, held at Cairo nightclub in Chicago on April 25, 1991.
North Beach Leather was founded as a leather goods store by Michael Hoban and Frank Morgan in Los Angeles in the mid-1960s. Hoban's leather designs proved popular with hippies, and the store moved to San Francisco's North Beach district in 1967, adopting the name North Beach Leather shortly thereafter. The company expanded throughout the 1970s and 1980s, opening eleven branches across the US, and by the 1990s were the largest privately owned leather company in the country. They are today perhaps best remembered for their custom work for celebrities such as Elvis and Elton John, and for the creation of the "8-Ball jacket," as seen in performances by Salt-n-Pepa.
