Based on Richard Preston's article "Crisis in the Hot Zone," first published in the "New Yorker" in 1992, about efforts to study and contain haemorrhagic viruses. In 1994, director Ridley Scott was reported to have been attached to the production, with Robert Redford and Jodie Foster set to star, but the project was ultimately canceled after "Outbreak," a medical disaster film with similar themes, was released in 1995.
