Ives first found mainstream success during World War II, in Irving Berlin's 1943 film musical "This Is the Army." He became a star of CBS Radio, later crossing over into country music in the 1960s. He is today most strongly associated with the holiday season due to his appearance as Sam the Snowman in the 1964 Christmas television special "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," also contributing a number of songs to the film soundtrack.
