From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s.
Stage, radio, film, and television actress Ann Sothern's career spanned nearly six decades. A deft comedian and talented singer, Sothern appeared in over 75 films from the late 1920s until the 1980s, and quickly became an television star in the 1950s in two early television series, "Private Secretary" (1953-1957), which earned three Emmy Award nominations, and "The Anne Sothern Show" (1958-1961). She is perhaps best remembered for her role as the brash Brooklyn showgirl Maisie Ravier in "Maisie," which proved so popular it spawned a ten film series and a network radio series. In 1988 she received her only Academy Award nomination at the age of 79 for the film "The Whales of August."
