Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman were considered for the titular role, although actor Robert Powell ultimately won out due to his strong physical resemblance to the popular western conception of Jesus, using Warner Sallman's 1940 painting "Head of Christ" as a guide.
Shot on location in Morocco and Tunisia.
